29 Aug The Next Manufacturing Revolution is here…
The next manufacturing revolution is here. An interesting Ted talk by Boston Consulting group discusses what lies ahead for manufacturing and Industry 4.0
A reminder on what exactly is the 4thIndustrial revolution? Well, lets start with the first three…
The 1stindustrial revolution started in the 1800s with the advent of the steam engine. The 2ndindustrial revolution was led by Henry Ford in the early 1900s with mass production. The 3rdindustrial revolution began in the 1970’s with the introduction of robotics and computerized manufacturing.
And now we sit at the dawn of the 4thindustrial revolution and what is known as Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 brings together technologies that enable the next generation manufacturing enterprise. It will enable scaled production with smaller and more agile factories. Production will be more localized, supply chains will be simplified and many times more responsive. Some of the technologies include: additive manufacturing, augmented reality, predictive analytics , artificial intelligence and enterprise manufacturing intelligence
Some argue that these concepts have existed for a while, however the pace of change has accelerated and many of the ideas now have the attention of corporate CEOs. These technologies are starting to deliver measureable business results.
Don’t get lost in the pack. Find the technologies and solutions that make sense for your business. Align technologies with business objectives. Expect some failure but also expect some wildly successful projects.
